January 27, 2005 — The Bear Search and Rescue Corporation has awarded the Fayetteville Police Department's dive team a grant in the amount of $4,380.00. The grant was used to purchase four new sets of dive gear. The dive team was formed two years ago as a part of the Police Department's Search and Rescue Team and currently has ten members.
The Bear Search and Rescue Foundation was created in memory of Bear, an eleven-year-old search and rescue K-9. Bear and his handler, Captain Scott Shields, were the first K-9 search and rescue team on the scene of Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. Bear was credited with finding the most victims at the site of the World Trade Center. During his time at Ground Zero, Bear suffered an injury to his leg that became cancerous. Bear survived the injury but later died of multiple types of cancer one year later.
