March 31, 2005, Bedford Hills, New York Tongues and tails are wagging! The Town of Bedford and the Bedford Dog Owner's Group (BDOG) are pleased to announce that June 30th will be the date happy dogs (and their owners) can begin frolicking at Northern Westchester's brand new 17-acre off-leash dog park, the Bedford Canine Tribute Park!
Over the winter, BDOG was busy indoors working on the design of the park and the layout of the park's agility training center. This spring, construction at the site is set to proceed at a fast clip in order to meet the June 30th deadline for funds awarded to BDOG through the U.S. Forest Service's Living Memorial Grant Program. Much work will be done over the next three months at the park including driveway construction, plantings and fence installations. Eager dog owners can follow along with the progress being made through a work schedule checklist posted on the group's website, www.bedfordDOG.org.
"So many people are itching to use this facility that we wanted to have them experience it as soon as possible." said Patricia Barry, President of BDOG. On June 30th, Phase I, which creates the basic features of the park - the enclosure areas, the agility training center and the woodland trails - will be completed. The remainder of the features, the memorial entranceway to the Working Dogs of 9/11, the meadow area and a pond, will be installed in phases as funds permit. The memorial entranceway will feature a likeness of Bear, the golden retriever who came to symbolize the bravery and dedication shown by over 350 search and rescue and therapy dogs following the events of 9/11. BDOG is planning to mark the completion of the Bedford Canine Tribute Park with a formal dedication ceremony in Spring 2006.
Those looking to get their hands dirty at the dog park site will get a chance this spring. BDOG will need the community's help with clean-up, planting and trail-making projects at the dog park. Look for upcoming dates and information on the group's website and in local newspapers.
Dog enthusiasts can also help by contributing to the dog park effort. Despite the U.S. Forest Service grant and generous support from the community, BDOG is still approximately $70,000 short of the funds it needs to complete Phase I. The group hopes to raise the remaining funds through in-kind donations of needed services/materials and community fundraisers. One of the upcoming events will take place on June 18th. On that date, BDOG will be hosting Bedford's Going to the Dogs!, a dog-gone fun cocktail party and silent auction fundraiser at the Bedford Historical Hall. Individuals or corporations interested in sponsoring, donating auction items or advertising for the event can call Vickie Hall at 914-242-0936 or check event information on www.bedfordDOG.org.
