MANSFIELD Dog is man's best friend, the old saying goes. But in the case of a Qualters Middle School student, it's the other way around.
Seventh-grader James Patrick "J.P." Wilkinson has raised $1,000 for the Bear Search and Rescue Foundation, which supports the work of canine rescue teams.
Wilkinson had set out to do a book report on dogs, then was drawn into the story of "Bear" and his handler, Scott Shields, the first canine rescue dog team on the scene of the collapsed World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
He called Shields as a follow up to his research, grew more interested in the vital work of search and rescue dogs, and a cause was born.
